we rescued a puppy mill Bichon 13 years ago....it was over 2 years before she would allow us to touch her. But, now at 16, she is the sweetest baby. I will never regret taking that challenge on.

since we got our rescue Charlie, who was also a stray so we don't know her history. she had and continues to have extensive training. she's on prozac (which i want to get her off of). She's pretty good at home, but still reactive at the door and on walks.

this story is encouraging, sort of...since she does say he's still a grumpy old man. i probably have to adjust to the fact that Charlie will probably never be a fixture at the dog park. We'll keep working at it. I was spoiled by my old man Chase, who we got at 12 weeks old and has such a splendid disposition that we never even trained him for anything. He didn't need it, he was just naturally perfect. loved all people, all other dogs, cats, whatever. Charlie was a shock to my system.

what they went through before reaching us.
Simone, our rescue, was fostered out after getting rescued from the puppy mill...then the foster home left the gate open and she got out. She was out in the wild, wooded area for 6 weeks before they could trap her....we got her immediately after that. So, we knew it was gonna take a lot of patience and love, but it has been worth it. Have patience with Charlie. he will come around...maybe never completely normal, but still YOUR baby.

He is a grumpy little guy too. He doesn't like other dogs, cannot be trained to stop jumping on people, isn't allowed to sleep with us because if we accidentally wake him he growls and snaps at us.

But he has stopped growling at any stranger we bring into the house. He mostly likes everyone now. He can be very cuddly and snuggly at times. And his general disposition is much improved.

We've had a dog shrink in, and she said he is a dog that needs to feel like he has some control over his environment, so we work with him to earn treats etc. So he can make treats happen.

He's very willful, rarely comes when called, believes he owns the house and sleeps on all the furniture.

But he is incredibly cute. Spoiled. He gets loads of love and he is very slowly coming around.
