(8,802 posts)Actually had various horses, cows, dogs, chickens, pigs, and for a time a mule, etc.
But Poncho was a small, older 13 hand palomino gelding that was very tame and usually allowed out of pasture (horses and cows) across the highway or horse pen nearer the house to wander the yard more like a dog than horse. Baby was a yellow tom cat.
My Dad used to get up very early in the AM for work and sit and smoke and drink coffee to get ready for the day. Poncho would be at the window with Baby on his back doing what the family called "meditating" with Dad. This was in late 50s and early 60s.
The house had been the lodge from a fishing resort and was part made of logs including log steps on the main door off a covered area. It was the very earliest days of TV there, two channels, B&W and very grainy and there was an antenna up in the top of a nearby 180 foot tall Douglas fir. During the day my grandmother would do housework and have the soap operas on the TV. Poncho would nose open the screen door and get his front hooves in the house, back hooves below the lowest log step, and watch the TV with "Ekie", swith Baby on his back. Sometimes Poncho would pick up baby with his teeth very gently by the scruff of neck to move him or maybe just for shits and giggles and attention or sugar, carrots, or oats.
