Stray Cat Shows Up Outside Guy's Window In Polar Vortex

“She was 100 percent asking to be let in."

BY LILY FEINN

Nathaniel Styer was working from home earlier this week when he noticed an unusual scene outside his apartment window.

An intense burst of wind and heavy snowfall brought on by the polar vortex, known as a “snow squall,” started blanketing his Brooklyn neighborhood in white.

And it seemed he wasn’t the only one who wanted to be inside.

A tabby cat had hopped up on the window ledge and was scratching and rubbing against the screen. “She was 100 percent asking to be let in,” Styer told The Dodo.

He recognized the cat as Chunk Chunk, one of the members of a nearby stray cat colony. Styer knew Chunk Chunk was experiencing a moment of crisis — and he had to act.

“I've never seen her react this way before,” Styer said. “It was clear that she didn't know what to do in the storm.”

“I've always been pretty reticent about bringing the cats inside, but I knew Renee would really want me to help Chunk Chunk out,” he explained. “I love Renee and I knew helping Chunk Chunk was the right thing to do.”

As for Chunk Chunk, it’s unlikely that the sweet cat will ever have to brave another chilly New York day ever again.

“We’re still figuring out what’s next for Chunk Chunk, but in the meantime, she’ll be staying with us,” Becerra said. “Chunk Chunk seems to be more suited for life indoors versus outdoors, so I’ll be reaching out to our contacts at the ASPCA to see if they can assist me in finding her a home.”

to go for help. It's heartbreaking to still hear of so many strays around. I know when I originally moved into my old neighborhood, there were strays everywhere (cats mostly, a couple of dogs), and eventually as the neighborhood stabilized and came back up, the strays disappeared and even more amazing, wildlife started reappearing in the park right next to us (3 blocks away, short blocks), foxes, etc. Possums, raccoons too.

I don't whether it's caused by a relationship of more money, more people taking care of their pets and/or more food in the trash or more pets being brought into the neighborhood etc. attracting the wildlife, but it was a wonderful treat especially in the heart of urban St. Louis (1/2 mile away from the Botanical Gardens, Tower Grove Park, donated by Bernard Shaw (the gardens and the park, a wonderful gift to the city of St. Louis, and plants everywhere).

This was much more preferable compared to when I walked from the parking lot in downtown to work, at 5:30 a.m. and saw all of the rats scurrying away (don't anymore for quite a while thank goodness).

Happy HEART day!

My last cat was SOOOO communicative. He had all sorts of different meows. When I came home from work every day he told me all sorts of stories about what he did. When people came to the door he was very cordial and greeted everyone. He was such a funny and sweet little guy. Clung to me like velcro. He lived to be almost 20 years old. I found him as an abandoned stray when he was just a couple weeks old, so he definitely saw me as his mom. I still miss him.

who are allergic to cats can often coexist with Siberian cats as they have lower levels of the allergen causing protein in their saliva. Something to consider, maybe you could have a cat after all. My SO is allergic to cats too but our Siberian’s don’t bother him. There are some other breeds which are less allergic as well.

is doing a wonderful job. That cat looks well cared for (even the first picture of her outside) and, based on her ear, looks like they may have a TNR program in place.

Kudos to them and to the man who let her in!
