Geico can't protect that here, it's too often. We also avoid hitting moose, wolverines, badgers, salmon that JUMP ONTO THE ROAD, shrews, really big eagles and ravens...……...

They have signs throughout the year warning drivers to slow down for nesting shore birds and ....
Wait for it.....migrating Monarch Butterflies. If you drive slow enough, the butterflies will swoop up and over your car. Pretty cool. We’ve camped out there at the campgrounds when the Monarchs are moving through (usually in Oct.) and it is such a cool sight to see them on trees and bushes everywhere.

I confess the the grownups were, too!

We are in Northwest Florida in the Western edge of the Panhandle. The fort and the seashore are closed to visitors by the shut down. It is such a great place to visit the White sandy beaches and tour the historic Fort Pickens. I know there are some unhappy Snowbirds who are missing their camping out there, too. And some locals, too.

Are you anywhere near Panama City? Didn't spend much time there but it was great.

Ft. Augustine? The Pier at Cape Canaveral? Dad was one of those NASA guys...

And if anyone doesn’t know it, those folks in Panama City and Mexico Beach are still hurting from the hurricane that struck 3 months ago. Let’s not forget them.

It still pisses me off that help wasn't given. I have, through GoFundMe, etc. but our government should have stood up.

I went through Donna as a child, Katrina as an adult. If I have extra, I give.

My last NAVY tour was there. Loved the area. Glorious white sand beaches. One afternoon, I was sitting on the beach and saw off to the east a ribbon of orange in the sky. What is THAT ? I wondered. Well, it got closer and closer and it was a migration of thousands of Monarchs ! I sat as still as a stone and they landed all over me for 5 or so minutes at a time: Some landed, took a breather and then flew off. This went of for a half an hour or so.

I have never felt so embraced by Nature. I will NEVER forget that. It is one of my fondest memories in life. I just wish someone had been there with a camera. Me, covered head to toe in butterflies.

The monarchs seem to be decreasing in number. Sadly.....but when we camped out there they were quite abundant. That was maybe 5 years ago? Anyhow, seeing them clinging on the bushes and flying all over the place was quite spectacular! Lucky you to have a once in a lifetime experience!

I had a similar experience at Andrew Molera State Park in CA, on the beach side of Big Sur. My friend and I went to this "new" at the time park to check it out in mid-Oct. When we started down the trail, we noticed all this movement in the air so went down to the trees, and the air was liquid orange and black and the butterflies were coating the leaves, constantly coming and going in the stiff breeze. We stood real still with our arms out and after a few minutes, the monarchs started settling on us. I have never felt a greater sense of total joy and wonder like I did in that time with the millions of beautiful monarchs experienced so unexpectedly. Definitely one of the highlights of my life.

Reminds me of the pet mouse I had as a kid - I named him Franklin D Roosevelt! He enjoyed blueberries, or rather a blueberry! He'd eat it sitting up, turn it round and round in his tiny paws, chew off the skin, then he'd eat the middle...
