It was something I'd never seen before. I had conversations with two separate people last night because of how unusual it looked. I doubt it had anything to do with the upcoming eclipse and blood wolf moon, though.

I love these events and hope to see tonight's. Thank you for posting the info and links. I'm going to go take a look at the weather map now.

What you described is a halo caused by ice crystals in high, thin cirrus clouds. They cal be around either the sun or the moon and can also have Sun or Moon "dogs".

"...can become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright"...too bad it isn't October. But we'd have to put a watch on the White House...

it's currently dropping little bits of snow and rain and might be around for a while. Maybe there will be an opening during that time so I can see it, even if it's just thin clouds that it can be seen through, I'll be happy.

Also, Look for Jupiter and Venus together (conjunct) tomorrow morning from about 4am to whenever it's too light to se them anymore just before the sun crosses the horizon. They will be low in the south and rise pretty high by the end of their visibility. They will be the last illuminated bodies you can see and they will be together so easy to pick out... and they are really bright.

I'll be staying up to watch it. I think it's happening around 11:40 until after midnight EST.
