"They looked like a piece of clothing ... but on second glance I knew what it was."BY SARAH V SCHWEIG
A man was driving a truck of milk through a snowstorm in Canada when he noticed a strange black spot amid a world of white.
When he inched closer he realized that he needed to rush out of the driver's seat and brave the elements a life, or lives, depended on it.
Three tiny black kittens were huddled together there in the snow. And there were no paw prints surrounding them, indicating they had probably been thrown there from the road.

Compton promptly scooped up the kittens and drove them back to his home 12 miles away, where his wife and daughter were waiting to warm up the tiny strays and save their lives.
The family, who already has two cats and two dogs, all rescues, also got in touch with a local animal rescue group, Deer Lake Kitten Rescue (DLKR), which helped coordinate the kittens' veterinary care and transfer to a shelter.

"If I hadn't seen them they would certainly have died," Compton said. "They will be [up for adoption] as soon as they are in perfect health."
You can make a donation to the NL West SPCA or apply to adopt these kittens.

I wish the monster who dumped these precious ones in the snow to die experiences nothing but misery the rest of his/her pathetic life. Bless the delivery man for saving them.

(1,975 posts)was also dumped. At 20 below. She's mean as a rattlesnake, sings at the top of her lungs, snags a daddy-lap every chance, and did I mention sings?
He called me at work and said can I keep her (after wrapping her in his parka and taking her inside to warm and water). Well, hell yeah!

(17,235 posts)Thankfully he was in the right place at the right time to save these kittens lives. It is unbelievable how cruel some horrible humans can be.

(31,518 posts)the elements, run over by a vehicle or killed by predators. I grew up in the country and there were always unwanted pets being dumped and left to fend for themselves. Very few of them find homes. Most starve, die from disease or are shot as nuisance animals. It is more humane to euthanize an animal than to abandon them in this manner.

(5,324 posts)The only slightly disturbing aspect of this is that before he "rushed out of the driver's seat and braved the elements" he first took a photo, revealing that he had an interest in soaking up some praise on the Internet. His motivation was a little more than just rescuing kittens.
Having rescued before, he probably knew this could also generate interest for their eventual adoption. These stories are instructive and heartwarming. I can appreciate the few moments it took to take the photo.
And black cats are the last to be adopted, so this story could help too.

(5,324 posts)It's ironic that you should mention Jesus because this is straight from his Sermon on the Mount:
2 Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
I don't know if this guy is a Christian or not. I'm not, but if he believes in Jesus then I'm just saying that he's not following his advice. Cats can be needy too.

(2,191 posts)I don't think it's disturbing at all, but since you said "slightly," we're not far apart.
I don't think that he did it for praise. As a rescuer already, he undoubtedly knew that the few seconds he stopped to take pictures would engender many donations to this shelter and, possibly, others. It's not like he took a picture of a drowning animal. Cold slows down the bodily functions. Those seconds might make the difference in someone donating or even adopting one of those kittens. It shouldn't make a difference, but it does.

(37,748 posts)Slightly disturbing you perceived it as such; though possibly your interest is simply "in soaking up some attention on the Internet..."
