(7,398 posts)yard will not let me put a hat on them. They just run up on a tree branch and use what I suspect is vulgar language.

(23,248 posts)I once had a wild squirrel sit on my knee and munch cheese & crackers. I was reclining on a picnic table in a state park, when it chased another squirrel past me. The other squirrel ran on away, but this one stopped and looked at me for a minute. I tossed it a bit of cracker, and he picked it up and ate it with a "Can I have another, please?" look on its face. I tossed another one, closer, then another. Set one on the bench, and it jumped up there and took it, and stayed. I kept luring it closer until it sat on my knee and ate about three pieces, then decided he'd had enough and went on his way. It was quite a cool experience.

(804 posts)I like squirrels (all animals, really); even though they can be a bit troublesome, they're cute about it.

Took me quite a while to find feeders they couldn't chew their way into......

(777 posts)But here in New Mexico we have rock squirrels; ground squirrels the size of tree squirrels. Raid the garden and fruit trees and undermine buildings, so they get live-trapped and relocated to the national forest.

(2,097 posts)he (she?) was obviously quite used to people. My daughter and I were visiting the city, and had been walking, A LOT. So I convinced her to sit for awhile on a park bench. We were not eating snacks. A squirrel came over, really close, and we just silently watched him. Soon he started pawing through her purse that was sitting open on the ground in between her feet. He found nothing, and then climbed up her leg and started looking in her coat pockets! Finding nothing, he just sat on her lap, looking disgusted at us. We held our empty hands out and apologized for not bringing him anything and he climbed down and ran off. It was amazing.

(9,426 posts)What an experience. Lots of squirrels in my back yard in Illinois. None so friendly as yours was. Cute little critters.

(2,097 posts)Mostly, they just run across the power line and stop occasionally to yell at the dog, which just makes her bark at them even more insanely. Life's little power struggles. 🐿 vs. 🐕

(28,125 posts)I loved my squirrels and have stories. What happened to them?
Well, after years of feeding them and actually having one come in when I was turning too slowly to get more stale bread? Damn hawks moved unto our forest for awhile. Caught one sitting on my deck railing, probably after killing one of my pet squirrels.
My squirrels disappeared.

(2,596 posts)They can be destructive when they're building their nests (I believe it's when they're preparing for babies). I hand two chair cushions and a recliner mattress pad that they chewed holes in about two years. Now we just store them in the garage as fall draws near. And forget about trying to grow tomatoes or stone fruit. It'll never happen.
