"Gilding the lily" really means trying artificially to make beautiful something that's already beautiful and doesn't need improvement. Serving cold, cheap fast food on silver platters is sort of the opposite - more like trying to put lipstick on a pig or polishing a turd.

Where have we gone so wrong that this image looks like something out of a Federico Fellini movie? Gold candelabras, sterling silver gravy boats from Lincoln’s White House with dipping sauce for Chicken McNuggets, cold crappy fast food sandwiches on silver trays,
warm salads, White House employees doing acts they know are crazy, a world famous portrait of Abe Lincoln in the background and a crazy looking “Fellini clown” over seeing this shit show. And all the time our government is shut down over something that is not a
problem and the shut down is no doubt because of orders from Vlad Putin.

Talk about down the rabbit hole.
