The DU Lounge

Regardless of your ethnic make up many of us are intrigued by spiritual mediums. We have a place nearby called Cassadaga, where many mediums live. When I was younger, it was a ritual bonding experience to get a car load of office mates to drive up to Cassadaga for a reading.
Today, I'm not opposed to readings, but I would only go to accompany someone who has a need for company. Mostly, the readings I've had, after the first one, were all too generic to be meaningful. What I do remember from the first guy, was that he claimed I had a bright golden light that attracted people to me, but that they would take, without giving back. He expressed it this way, "You have a bright golden light that pours into your heart, but your heart is like a cup with a hole at the bottom, and that light spills out." I guess he left it up to me to figure out how this would work out in the end.
The only other medium that skirted the issue of the troubles I would have to bear in life pulled up a card with a person that had something like nine or twelve swords piercing through the body. Again, the reading was generic.
Here's my question. All of these mediums were white. I wondered if they were interpreting my "future" in ways that only a white person could relate to. I wonder what would happen if I would go to an ethnic minority medium? How would they interpret it.
God, I would love to hear one say, "Grrrl, you need to find a new circle of friends."

(1,975 posts)This was in the 1970's. The main thing I remember is the Spanish moss on the live oaks. I didn't get a "reading".....
But the restaurant nearby was good. One of the "readers" I was introduced to was black. She was absolutely gorgeous and if I'd believed, that's who I'd have gone to.

(46,758 posts)It is a mystical place with Spanish moss hanging from old oaks and dusty backroads. Im sure it has changed since my time.

(1,975 posts)Never felt a need to go back. But it did, at that time, feel "spiritual" if that's the word. And that woman was still one of the most beautiful I've ever seen in my lifetime.
