Turn me on to your favorite modern psychedelic rock music acts.
MGMT took the music world by storm with their first record and had several electronic alt rock hits on it. I think the record went multi-platinum which is saying a lot now days. It's a harder achievement than it was 20 years ago. I liked one song off of that album really well, but didn't like enough of the others that I heard to buy the album.
They then took a hard turn out to left field with their second album which was much more trippy than the first, and they relied more on the guitar. They had decent sales on it, I think fueled by the popularity of the first album, but nothing like the first album. I thought it was a great album and I bought it and played it to death. Then the third album came out which is their self-titled album and it sounds like the musical equivalent to LSD. Although it got decent reviews, last I heard it hadn't sold 50,000 copies, and they had no hits off of it. I think it is their best album to date. They came out with their fourth full-length album last year, and they were back into 80s synth pop mode. I guess the record company cracked the whip on them. It was more popular than the previous psychedelic odyssey, but they may have lost too many fans with their journey out into a musical alternate universe.
Here is a tune off of that self-titled album. Like the music, the video is strange.

(22,722 posts)I've discovered tons of great new music here. Plus it recommends movies, books and more. Just type in a favorite band and it spits out a "molecule" like response of other similar music. The closer to the center, the more similar. Count on spending lots of time here!

(10,418 posts)Got its roots in Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. I dig metal, too. I also dig your sig line. I'm probably one of the few DUers still here who knows what WWMFMD means.
On edit: and that sounds like Alan Watts on the voice over at about the 11-12 minute mark. He's one of my heroes.

(12,132 posts)They have sampled Alan Watts on several tracks - they dig that kind of thing.. if they ever roll though your town, their live show is amazing. That's what got me hooked - I hadn't heard them but a local band I like was opening up for them so I went and was so glad I did.
