We thought we could hem up our cats in the laundry while we ate meals. One of our boys wasn't having any of that. He wedged his nose into one of the gaps in the louvers and managed to pop several of them completely out so he could climb through. Naturally, the other cats followed him.

which is where they have their food and litter boxes.

However, the door opens out from the basement and had a latch handle on it - so, if the cat reaches up and tries to hit the latch, the cat's body weight is already against the door as it pulls down on the latch and the door opens...

So, we changed that one door from a latch handle to a round handle that the cats can't press down.

My Doowerling Dorter has a Pibbie. He's been told, firmly, that he cannot pass the gate. Even with it merely leaning across the door unattached, he won't jump over it or knock it over. I don't know whether he's really that well trained, or just not smart enough to figure out that he can do that. I lean toward the latter explanation.

I use the high metal ones that are a tight fit in a doorway. They work if she doesn't really want to get out, but when she wants to, she can push them out and just walk on through. She's a mutt....combo Jack Russell / Lab and other breeds. Short but strong, and very smart.

I used a regular height one at first. But she could jump over those with no problem. The Jack Russell in her.

But my Cocker Spaniel - I could just lean the short one against the doorway, and he wouldn't budge it. He was scared to knock things down, I think.

Yeah...any dog who puts a hole in a door like that could easily push that gate out. Unless it's screwed in. In fact, if it's screwed in, there's room to climb over it through that hole he created. Clever, strong dog, determined not to be shut in.

And boredom. Some dogs have to have jobs, or something to keep them occupied. I got DogTV for mine...works pretty well.
