For Christmas I made a pea/potato/mushroom soup, roasted capon, potatoes, gravy, Au Gratin veg casserole, salad, rolls, and I also baked a cake. Not a cake from a box mix - a cake from 'scratch' with home made butter cream icing. Well, nothing was from a mix. This was a true home made dinner. And, as I sat there eating, I could barely taste a thing because I was so exhausted. I actually discovered, later, a big blistered burn on my finger that I just didn't have the time or energy to notice or feel the pain until the next day.
Today I prepared the capon carcass to be made into soup, and re-heated some leftover meat, potato, gravy and veg for my lunch. Damn, I'm a good cook.

(2,220 posts)I fell asleep at the table. I feel your pain, as I also prefer cooking from scratch.
I made a brisket this year. We had it again tonight, and theres still enough for tomorrow.
sick of the thought of food by the time some huge meal is put together...

(31,999 posts)Made homemade just about everything. And, yes, I was exhausted, as well. After my company left and I had everything all cleaned up, it took me all of about two seconds to fall asleep on the couch!
If all I had to do was cook, it wouldn't be so bad, but getting every room in my house clean all at the same time is a Herculean task!
We ate our leftover lasagna tonight and will have even more leftovers tomorrow (roast beef). After cooking for days in a row, it felt SO GOOD to just heat something up tonight.

(20,190 posts)Always thought it was a waste that male chicks are killed in commercial chicken production. I know capon requires more time though, and time is money.

(26,263 posts)It was about 8 1/2 lbs. I've never roasted one, before. The flavor was wonderful. I stuffed it with celery, carrots, onion, garlic and fresh rosemary, sage and thyme.
