The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI heard on NPR about an hour ago that musicians Eric Clapton,
Huey Lewis, and Roger Daltrey had significant hearing loss. I expect other aging rockers have this problem as well, but the public doesnt know it.

(9,696 posts)I'm watching Bruce Springsteen on Broadway (on Netflix) and was noticing that he yells a lot. Then realized he probably has hearing loss.

As a musician and fan I got a double dose of it.

(17,482 posts)I'd often be stuck at stage side in some of the small venues. I couldn't mix with earplugs in. We got new gear where I could walk around with my I-Pad and mix remotely, but it was too late. This was only after several hundred shows.
Some of the old timer musicians I worked with need outrageously loud monitor mixes with very unusual equalization. Delbert McClinton comes to mind. When we did him in a small room, all you could hear was his stage mix in the room.

(9,671 posts)Our neighbor is basically incapacitated by Tinnitus. It's the worst case I've seen. He's a good musician and still plays, albeit quietly. He played in many bands over the years which lead to his current state. He usually has his custom earplugs and/or muffs in around the house and definitely does not risk going anywhere without them for fear any sudden, especially unanticipated noise will set his ears off. It doesn't take much either, sometimes just a finger snap. I have a much more mild case of it so can appreciate his misery.

(9,197 posts)The loudest concert I ever attended was the Who in a domed stadium. I'm surprised I'm not deaf after that, but I do have some hearing loss, particularly high frequency due to wearing VERY LOUD headphones while on the radio.

I hate seeing young men doing landscaping work with loud equipment and no ear protection. They will lose their hearing too.

(10,109 posts)I spent a lot of time listening to loud music and going to some loud shows. Now on the rare occasion when I do go to a show I wear ear protection. I can't even imagine Dylan, the guy has been on the Never Ending Tour for decades.

We don't think of these rock stars as elderly. But, a lot of them are.
