A stubborn cold crept up on me Saturday night. I went to bed feeling a bit congested and weary and woke up on Sunday with a full blown cold. I am now almost 100% and ready to head back to work. Here is the secret to beating the common cold.
Eat like a pig the first day you come down with cold. I mean really shovel it in even if you can't taste it. Eat twice or even three times as much as you would in an ordinary day. 6000 calories? Go for it.
That night dose up on every cold medicine you have in the house. I took doses of Alka-Seltzer Plus, Tylenol Cold and Flu, and Nyquil all at the same time.
Sleep for twelve hours. Wake up and eat a normal meal then take four times the recommended dosage of Nyquil.
Sleep for 24 hours.
And bam! You're ready to go again back to the grind.
Actually you might not want to do all that, but it worked for me. Also, note that I weigh 250 pounds so I don't usually go by the recommended dosages anyway.

(6,804 posts)Hot damn, you scared that cold right out of you. I do, however, agree that eating and sleeping is the best cure.

(115,836 posts)Just the normal dose is enough to knock me out for many hours. And be careful with some of that stuff - if there's acetaminophen in it, it can mess up your liver.

(2,167 posts)Seriously, I discovered airborne a bunch of years ago and take a couple tablets when I feel a cold coming on and its always gone the next day. I swear by it.

(3,601 posts)Put a hat on the bed. Go to bed with a bottle or more of whiskey. Drink the whiskey. When the one hat becomes two, your cold is cured. Get a good night's sleep.

(44,974 posts)This woman took multiple cold meds, overdosed on acetaminophen, and ended up needing liver transplant.

(10,418 posts)I didn't exceed the recommended dosage of acetaminophen for a daily period. I'd also be willing to bet that that woman was taking more Tylenol over a much longer period of time than she states.

(44,974 posts)Not sure about Alka Seltzer plus. You are suggesting taking them together and then, 12 hours later, taking 4 time the dose of Nyquil. How much acetaminophen did you take? And it might be fine for you as a larger person, but could cause a problem for a smaller person.

(10,418 posts)Seriously, that's kind of like saying if you drink three beers in a day it's going to kill you.

(44,974 posts)I don't think any MD is going to recommend taking multiple cold meds together.

(8,854 posts)...of a cold coming on I just start drinking lots of tea with Really Raw Honey. Also, chicken noodle soup and lots of water. Haven't had a full-blown cold in over 20 years.
