Why the F*** do smoke detectors beep loudly and randomly?! Even after replacing several batteries and pressing the test button on them all so they all communicate and be happy??

(9,353 posts)They went off whenever I cooked and it was truly painful for me to get close enough to turn them off. I mean TRULY PAINFUL.
I have a weird thing with my hearing that makes loud screeching noises a major issue for me.
It should be ok since I live in a high rise building and dont try to do pyrotechnics in my spare time.

(1,883 posts)Even on new detectors and new batteries. My best guess is either dust or insects on the sensor.
Scares the crap out of the poor dogs and always happens at night.

It's an awful allergen.

(25,865 posts)I live in a small (just under 1,000 sq feet) place, and it had four smoke detectors, all hardwired into the the walls or ceilings, depending on where they were located. They also needed batteries replaced periodically. Several years ago one of them went off, shrieking as if the place were on fire, and of course it was the one located about 17 feet up the high wall in the living room and me with no ladder had no way to reach it. The only way to make it stop was the flip the breaker. Then I called the fire department.
They sent out a guy who was able to get high enough to take down the unit entirely, and explained quite nicely that there was probably dust or something that was setting it off and that honestly, I needed to get them all replaced.
I wound up disconnecting them all.
About two years ago my neighborhood association sent out flyers saying the would be installing free smoke detectors with 10 year batteries. All you had to do was let them know you wanted them and they'd put you on the list. We have no HOA but some dedicated volunteers who do nice things like this. So now I have two just under two years old smoke detectors.
We should all have working smoke detectors in hour residence and I'm very glad I have them.

(31,397 posts)11 years ago when our house burned down at 4:30 am.. It woke him up. The fire started just outside his bedroom and the house was an inferno within minutes. If he'd been overcome by smoke and unconscious, I'm not sure I'd have been able to get him out of the house by myself up the stairs from his downstairs bedroom. The exit on that level was blocked by the fire.
Yes, smoke detectors are a PITA when they beep. But please, do not disconnect them. You never know when they might save your life or the life of someone you love.
