I had the most god-awful test dream last night.

Dream didn't start out bad. I had thrown a party and it was so good that it lasted until dawn. Even the old guys that I had nothing in common with seemed to have enjoyed themselves.

But it was morning and we all had somewhere to go. We were all recruited to take a challenge that morning that was supposed to be a collective effort. It was like a think tank session. None of us were tired from spending an evening without sleep, because this was a dream.

I went to the venue and it was a great hall, like the one where they dine in the Harry Potter movies. Except that there were no walls. The chairs were old fashion chairs with desktops. They were connected five to a row and suspended over the edge of a cliff. Only the first chair had any floor to plant your feet. You had to climb over each other to get to the other chairs. I went to where my friends were, where there were two open chairs. I was late for some reason, probably because of party clean-up.

By the time I made it to my chair, the test had already begun. Yes, it was set up like standard test, except I didn't feel pressure because it was supposed to be a collaboration. My friends had already answered the first few, talking to each other to get to the answer.

I looked at the test and realized it was hard to read. The print was too small and even when I could read it, the questions changed. There was no real structure to it. I couldn't tell if it was multiple choice, or a test that we had to write in the answers, because there was little room between the questions to fill in a response. I never could see the No. 1 to mark the first question, to separate it from whatever gibberish was written at the top of the paper. And the other questions weren't marked chronologically.

Suddenly, I noticed that the room had gone quiet. No one was talking to each other. There was a dark figure behind us. Damn! It was a test!

I kept looking at the questions and could still not make any sense of what it was striving for. In fact, when I did manage to read the first question, it sounded like the answer would be found somewhere else in the exam. So, I figured I had to read the entire thing first, but couldn't.

I finally gave up and asked my friend to give me some advice and she looked at the figure standing behind us and asked her to loan me her magnifying glass. That was no help at all. Now I had to read a test through a lens that was so bad that it would move in and out on the lettering, going in and out of focus even if I kept it still.

So the dream ended the way it ends for every school kid who has had a nightmare about a test. My greatest dread: That everyone will finish and turn in their exam before I even responded to the first question.

Anyone else have exam nightmares?

Usually a variation of "still stuck on the first exam question with just a minute or two left on the clock". Wake up in a cold sweat, relieved that it was just a dream.

It’s like that part of the brain shuts down during the dream state.

Your dream sounds like you’re trying to compensate for unfinished obligations.

Usually I can remember a few passing moments of a dream with a bit of detail, but not to the extent you related.

The dream before that one I dreamed that I was part of a resistance group that was evading soldiers from an invading army. The entire village was the resistance force, but we had a way to escape through a trap door in the back of a barn to avoid direct confrontation. In fact, in most of my dreams, it's all about avoiding direct confrontation, or capture.

The trap door was a beautiful design that lead down tunnels carved on a rocky cliff. There was no reason that we all couldn't have escaped without the door being detected, except that the village idiot was drunk and the last one to go through. He just stood there long enough for the enemy to see him and the door was never closed.

So, we were trapped in a commercial building at the bottom of the cliff. What was worse, there were glass storefront windows so the enemy could see our every move. They were waiting for us to surrender, but were in no hurry, since the commercial building was as good a holding center as anything they could provide. We had small children and no weapons so there wasn't a direct threat.

Only a side bathroom was blocked to detection. I went in and looked at the ceiling and began tearing at it and found an old abandoned air vent, just large enough to squeeze the kids through. It lead, not just to the roof of the building, but out to another level on the mountain that wasn't being observed by the soldiers. From there, the kids could escape into a forested area that they knew well.

One by one we walked the kids to the bathroom and pushed them through the vent.

The dream ended with me trying to figure out how we would get all of us out through the night. We had laid down decoys under blankets to make it appear like the kids were bedded for the night and I was wondering when the soldiers would figure out that no one was moving under those blankets.

I get very explicit dreams.

Maybe it's your inner self telling you to do something with these stories. Like the one hour stories in the "Black Mirror" series on Netflix or "Electric Dreams" series on Amazon.

I'm guessing that it's my "Unfinished obligation" that is driving these explicit dreams.
