(65,483 posts)that they can get the job with just a high school diploma or a GED makes it relatively well-paid for those without other training or marketable skills, but heck, they could do unionized construction work for a decent wage and less danger.

(38,518 posts)A group of buddies and I climbed the local village water tower, which had just been installed, and was 150 feet tall. I had only a primer coat of paint, so we didn't feel bad about painting the school nickname and our year of graduation (69) on the side of the tank. I'm reliably informed that was certifiable, so a tower more than 10 times as high is easily as much.
BTW, 150 feet seems INCREDIBLY high. Trust me.

(35,363 posts)heights. I was told that once you get to 30 feet it doesn't matter how much higher you go, just takes you longer to hit ground.

(36,827 posts)It doesnt take very long to get used to the height. The worst part is when a buzzard builds a nest on the tower and dive bombs you on the way up.

Safely chaperoning FCC Commissioner Brendan Carrs ascent on an antenna atop a 2,000-foot tower are Ammon Snyder, at left, and Mike Young below. The techs had to chip off ice to ensure a safe climb.
FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr on Friday conducted a site visit to the KDLT TV broadcast tower located near Rowena, S.D. and climbed the top portion of the 2,000-foot tower.
On Thursday, it was an almost balmy for South Dakota 50 degrees. But when Carr arrived on site it was 30 degrees and snowing.
During his site visit, Carr, accompanied by experienced technicians from Sioux Falls Tower & Communications, was fitted with the appropriate fall protection equipment and ascended near the top of the tower utilizing the structures elevator, a 20-minute ride.
However, before he started climbing an off-line antenna that is scheduled to be exchanged for a new antennae for the repack in a week or two, Sioux Falls techs had to chip away ice to ensure a safe climb.
