(29,721 posts)I thought it was blackeyed peas, cornbread for gold and some greens (I can't remember which) for green money.

(6,280 posts).... usually consists of Black Eyed Peas, fried taters, cornbread sliced tomatoes, and what we call Poke Salad. A fried mixture of spinach and scrambled eggs. We have this kind of dinner quite a bit, but we alternate between black eyed peas, and pinto beans. Good stuff.

(102,343 posts)other small round fruits (to symbolize coins) are eaten (one for each month of the new year). It think grapes are attributed to Mexico and Spain.

(6,280 posts)I get that, but I'll bet a dollar to a dime that the majority of those traditional people don't stop at 12. Grapes Maybe, black eyed peas? Not a chance. Either way, whether it's 12, or a whole bowl, you've got it covered.

(20,586 posts)never heard of the 12 though. It's a big deal at my house and I'm always recruiting new black-eye pea eaters for New Years. My brother even gives a can as gifts to each of his step-kids for Christmas. By this time, I'm scared to miss it.

(14,893 posts)I haven't heard the one about the 12 black eyed peas, but I something similar with grapes.
Eating 12 grapes at midnight on New Year's Eve is both a tradition and a superstition in Spain. Rare is the Spaniard who will risk poisoning their fate for the coming year by skipping the grapes, one for each stroke of midnight.
