My mom (b 1913 in MO) ate them now and then when I was a kid. I think she said she started eating them when she was pregnant.

Living in Chicago I saw them in lower end grocery stores.

(25,895 posts)I've lived in various parts of the country, never the deep south.
Hadn't even heard of them before this post. Which proves that some things are much more regional than we realize.

(6,262 posts)Usually in jars near the meat counter of local independent grocery stores. Or on the shelf at your favorite tavern.
Not as many independent grocery stores now.

(36,463 posts)I used to really enjoy them, and was convinced the gelatin promoted strong fingernails.

(13,903 posts)I have not seen them in the stores. I remember a couple of jars at grandparents place. I don't where he got them. Something I have never looked for in the grocery store.

(58,706 posts)It's one of those things you might eat on a dare, and when your senses are half shot with alcohol. You know, bar food.
I haven't been in a bar is years, so I can't say if this is still a thing.
Of course, I haven't been looking for them.

(10,885 posts)As a little kid, I liked just the surrounding gelatin, swimming in vinegar. It wasn't until I was perhaps a teenage before I appreciated the actual meat.
I've never had a commercial version as I'm afraid it wouldn't measure up to Baci's wonderful home cooking. She spoiled me with her kitchen treasures.
Thanks for the memory!

(856 posts)Not sure if they still are. When I was in high school back in the 70's, I used to take my grandmother shopping so I could do the reaching and bending for her. She went up and down every aisle in the store so I saw everything. Today when I shop, I just go to the aisles I need to visit. I'm not even sure where they'd be if they were there. I don't recall seeing them anytime in the last decade or two though.
But yeah, big jars of the things. I've never had one. They just looked nasty/creepy.
I probably ought to take the time to go through the whole store again and really look at what all is there. There's no telling what I might discover!
