(12,132 posts)I like big soft bread though so that eliminates quite a few places - My favorite was from Larry's Giant Subs but they closed all of them here. I like the bread, cheese, meat and lettuce with only oil and a heavy HEAVY dose of red wine vinegar.
I keep vinegar and oil at home so I can order them to go and dress them at home.
The next best thing to Larry's is our local shop - Gabriel's - been in business for almost 60 years and most days you get your sub made by the grandson of the founder I believe. They just call it the Grinder but it is amazing. One of the only things Ive ever ordered and tell them just to make it their way. I usually like to tweak it or go to places where you pick your ingredients but this thing....this Grinder is perfect the way it comes. It's hard salami, capicola, provolone cheese, imported ham and prosciuttini topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers, oil and vinegar. Easily over a pound for the foot-long. Probably closer to 2.
BUT, there's another place that's close to work so we go there for an amazing slice of pizza and half a meatball sub for like 6 bucks. Comes with fries. The best 6 dollar lunch around except when their slice of the day is stuffed pizza and then you get 2 of those and a drink for 5 bucks and change. They also do a very nice eggplant parm sub.
I also routinely get the tuna on wheat at Wawa for lunch. I just love me some Wawa. Their cheese-steak is good too but, of course, I've never been to Philly so I don't have much to compare it with.
