Aldi's Whisky Ain't Bad.

Last edited Sun Sep 30, 2018, 07:52 PM - Edit history (1)

Originally posted this but it seems to be quite a stretch:

At the Spirits Business Scotch Whisky Masters, judges bestowed two gold medals on the Aldi brand—one for its Highland Black Scotch Whisky, and another for its Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky. (They share the gold with other entrants.) The Highland Black has hints of heather, strawberry leaf, and lemon oil, and retails for $17. The Islay Single Malt is "fresh and zesty," and retails for $23.

As Insider reports, Aldi's whisky also won gold medals last year at this competition. Its rosé wine is the proud recipient of a silver medal from an international competition, and its gin has been crowned best in the world multiple times as well.

Well not so, according to Spirited Matters.

Aldi’s Highland Black 8 Year Old is one of three blended Scotch whiskies aged 12 years or under which received a score of between 80 and 90 points in the Scotch Whisky Masters, netting them the second-tier award: gold medal.

But that’s not quite so soundbiteable as ‘voted best in the world’.

I'll still give the Highland Black Scotch a try.

Other grocery stores sell spirits so it must be an Aldi thing.

I do like their Winking Owl wines. The closest Trader Joe's, to me, is about 40 miles away so I've turned to Aldi for a 'Three Buck Chuck' substitute. I actually do about 90% of my grocery shopping at Aldi. If I'm not up there at least once a week, I suspect they start to worry about me.

I estimate 75% or greater of my grocery dollars are spent at Aldi. I've only been disappointed once by one of their wines: a Lambrusco the label of which I can't recall.

It may depend on the liquor license laws in each state. They can be very expensive. Florida for example only allows so many licenses, but they can be resold by the original buyer at a much higher cost, like a couple hundred thousand. I assume the same is true in other states.

There’s a lot of good spirits out there that don’t cost a lot of coin. It’s always good to see a cheap one do well in blind testing.

14. yup, for example some of the best wines I've tasted have been in the mid range cost wise.

And I've tasted some expensive stuff which fell flat.
