He's Berry Gordy's son, but when he first signed to Motown, he did it without his dad's knowledge to avoid the appearance of nepotism.(of course, everyone else at the label knew who he was) And he was childhood friends with Michael Jackson, which is how MJ at his career peak ended up singing background vocals for that song.
