Two industries: Oil and prisons. Oil is on the downswing, prisons are on the rise.

I've always experienced bad juju around prison guards. YMMV.

in the early 70's (I lived in Bakersfield then) it was pretty racially charged. I hope they have evolved by now. Anyway, good luck, and hope it's what you're looking for.

...the first is Fresno.

...the second is Bakersfield.

Towns on the edge...are the hairs of those armpits.

And yes, I know people in both areas.

But you can get cheap property in these "outskirts". Just remember...the pay often goes down with it. Just did a post about an area where I will get a significant raise...but so the cost of living.

I don't usually drive through that area...but with that said, if its anything like some towns north of Bakersfield, depending which way the wind blows...well, there is a reason why my wife and I call McFarland...McFartland. So I would check the out the location of the non-existent "pastures", in other words, cows raised on corn predominately instead of grass.

Also in the summer, the heat can be horrible.

And finally, this is the heart of Repub country in California.
