(22,048 posts)My first job was working for a small music company whose owner was spectacularly rich. He was a petty, small-minded vengeful man (sound familiar?) who was never consistent about the work calendar. He was first-generation Italian/American and it always made me laugh that he would close the office for Jewish holidays (his friends were Jewish) but he'd insist we work on Columbus Day.
One year, he insisted that we ALWAYS worked on the Friday following Thanksgiving even though we had been closed the previous seven years I worked there. When I called him out on this inconsistency, (I had travel plans and there was no way I was going in to work), we had a huge argument in which he backed down. He then asked the other employees why I was the only one to fight back. He was a real jackass.
I left that job within six months. The company I've been affiliated with for the last 15 years has a very liberal policy about work days. They close for every mainstream religious holiday, we have a long break during the end of the year holidays, and they have very nice summer hours in addition to maternity/paternity leave and illness leave. It's a much nicer place to work!

(182,877 posts)I had a boss who completely hated me. On 9/11 as everything was going on I went down to take a smoke break at 3pm. One of the security guards asked why I was still there. What? Everyone had been sent home at 2pm and my boss didn't bother to tell me.

(16,829 posts)I couldn't believe it. But I did the reading and I showed up with everyone else. When we got there he said "My wife told me this morning that today is a holiday. So you can all go home if you want to." Well, we weren't going to get up and leave his seminar, so we stayed... the only ones in class on a big empty campus.
