(8,071 posts)is a neighbor of yours! What?!?! I'm listening to him now. He's fantastic! If you ever talk to him tell him that a fan in California is awestruck.
Grasswire2
(13,571 posts)He has transcribed to paper many of the recorded solos of Louis Armstrong. Those solos are universally revered by jazz musicians as the greatest. Quite an accomplishment.

(17,340 posts)And check out their sometime alternative singer, China Forbes.
Here's the song that they had a hit with in France:
And here's another:

(8,071 posts)These are both excellent!

(3,419 posts)Storm Large quickly learned and performed the material when Ms Forbes had a serious illness that impacted her vocal chords. Both are excellent!
The group's leader, Thomas Lauderdale, is a major benefactor for music education in Portland, Oregon (their home).

(17,340 posts)I meant to say Storm Large, but it was late, I'd had a cocktail, and earlier in the evening we had been stuck in an elevator for 45 minutes.

gratuitous
(82,849 posts)Should be the soundtrack for some "falling in love" movie montage, in my opinion.
As to the placard for the "Hang on Little Tomato" song, that's a picture of Thomas Lauderdale with his adoptive father Kerby when the family drove across the country in 1980 to settle in Portland. They were out on the Great Plains, and Kerby held Thomas up for the "flying baby" shot in the wind. Kerby would later serve as my pastor for 10 years until his retirement, and Thomas could occasionally be prevailed upon to play at our Christmas Eve service.

(22,270 posts)In fact my first exposure was a live concert at Bass Hall in Fort Worth. It was a 'Pops' concert with the FW Symphony orchestra, and was so much fun!
Their mix of big band, pop, jazz, original works and classical is delightful. They sing in something like 8 languages, too. China Forbes is nothing short of amazing.
They have opened all three times I have seen them with a lively arrangement of "Bolero" with the symphony, which is fantastic. I was with a group of about 35 friends and we were up in the cheap seats (aka nosebleed) but that did not stop us from dancing the Conga with the band during the last number "Brazil"!
Latin, pop, classical, big band, original works, middle eastern - amazing variety.
My husband and I bought every CD we could get down in the lobby before we went home and played them in the car. I think we are caught up and now have all of them.
It always pleases me to find someone who has just discovered them!
