(22,179 posts)I calculate that 18 guys, at 150 lb. average, would weigh about 3,000 lbs. Way different than pulling a wagon with wheels. Unless its stuck in the mud (about the only time you'll see a horse digging in like this), once its in motion it pretty much stays going. This looks like a Belgian draft at a tractor pull, judging from the tractors in the background. Another good idea--blow your transmission.
We live in an area with a large Amish population--the largest in KY. I really hate seeing some poor horse (usually a Standardbred), pulling a carriage loaded down with the whole family. It can be 90+ degrees out, and they will still sit there and push the horse to tow them uphill.

(28,127 posts)They're insensitive, cruel, mean assholes. Describes most of mankind's relationship with most animals. The "gawd put them here for us for whatever purpose we so choose" attitude. The dominion over all animals shit. Grrrr.
This video made me go back and do some checking. Yes, draft horses can pull tons (literally) of weight. They were originally bred for heavy work, and to carry fully armored knights into battle. So in the larger scheme of things, I guess 3,000 lbs isn't that much.
BUT.... These big guys are, "Gentle Giants", and have the greatest temperaments. If you ever stand next to one, their backs are way over your head. But I still think, just because they can do something--and they will try their hearts out--doesn't mean they should for people's entertainment.
