(15,805 posts)Throughout the years some of my cats have had the strange ability to see into the supernatural realm, and whatever it is they see must terrify them. "House ghosts" is the best explanation I've come up with to explain why cats display a sudden fear response. They will alert on something only they can see, staring intently with their eyes wide, ears perked or sometimes flattened, and occasionally one would hiss or stand up on two legs, some were so spooked they ran, while others would slink off to hide.
When I first noticed this behavior in my cats, it scared me and I thought someone, or some thing, was in my house. Of course, nothing ever was, but this has happened in 3 different houses with many different house cats over several decades, all of whom were otherwise normal, lovable lapcats who could see these invisible "house ghosts". One of my two cats, Frosty, can see "house ghosts" with eerie regularity, just yesterday, in the predawn hours, he stopped in mid stride and whipped around to stare intently down the hallway and then pussyfooted over to the cat tree to hide in the top cave. It creeps me out everytime he does that.

(11,428 posts)that did shit like that. She'd be laying in the middle of the room and stand up and face the door with a ridge of hackles running down her back and start doing a really low growl and snarl.

(24,007 posts)His attention was completely captivated by something only he could see - sat stock-still and stared at whatever/whoever it was for what felt like the longest time. Very eerie.
