(86,646 posts)that image, it came in an email from my sister when I told her about my job teaching bear safety techniques. I sent it to another person who printed it and put it on their office door and then, was copied a few more times and ended up all over two districts... the only difference is that my image has the red circle/slash over it, I copied this one from google.

That is a big bear, I do not think I would want to be close by, and then startle it, then having it chase me down.
They are quick and can run up to 40 mph.

(86,646 posts)about the distance. 100 yards/91 meters is considered mostly safe. I know photographers who think they are some kind of special being who can get close to bears without alarming them, those are the ones you read about/see on the tube after they get beat up.
They can run @ approximately 35-40mph, faster than a human and can take down more than one in a sprint. We are small compared to some of the large animals they usually take down, no contest. People are pretty clueless when it comes to bears, their habitat and your safety, seen it with my own eyes for years.
