Today in rock history: Woodstock opens (1969), and Jimmy Webb is born (1946).
Also, Peggy Lee cut her first vocal with Benny Goodman (1941).
Peggy Lee
Norma Deloris Egstrom (May 26, 1920 January 21, 2002) known professionally as
Peggy Lee, was an American jazz and popular music singer, songwriter, composer, and actress, in a career spanning six decades. From her beginning as a vocalist on local radio to singing with Benny Goodman's big band, she forged a sophisticated persona, evolving into a multi-faceted artist and performer. During her career, she wrote music for films, acted, and recorded conceptual record albums that combined poetry and music.

Woodstock
The
Woodstock Music & Art Fairinformally, the
Woodstock Festival or simply
Woodstockwas a music festival in the United States in 1969 which attracted an audience of more than 400,000. Scheduled for August 1517 on a dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains of southern New York State, northwest of New York City, it ran over to Monday, August 18.
Meet Max Yasgur:
Closer to home, for me, was that on the same day, Hurricane Camille made landfall on Cuba. I have never been to Cuba, but Hurricane Camille came to see me, in central Virginia.
Hurricane Camille
Hurricane Camille was the second-most intense tropical cyclone to strike the United States on record. The most intense storm of the 1969 Atlantic hurricane season, Camille formed as a tropical depression on August 14 south of Cuba from a long-tracked tropical wave. Located in a favorable environment for strengthening, the storm quickly intensified into a Category 2 hurricane before striking the western part of the nation on August 15.
I'll say more about Hurricane Camille later, in the Virginia Forum.

"Wichita Lineman" is my favorite Jimmy Webb tune. Here it is from Glen Campbell's album:
This is bringing tears to my eyes right now. From May 2000:
I must be the only person who likes "MacArthur Park," Here it is anyway:
