There's not a lot to distinguish one gas station from another. The price difference is usually pennies apart, most gas is the same (even more so than most gas station chains would have you believe -- it literally comes from the same tanks at the same terminals, then is mixed with additives in some cases).
So an eye catching gas station makes a difference. Which is why you see more effort going into gas station architecture than restaurants or retail store architecture.
At least that's htuttle's theory on why gas stations look so weird sometimes.

(18,264 posts)my mom told my dad to look for a gas station with a "rest room". I had never heard that term, so I pictured fainting couches and lace curtains. (Would have been a perfect place for...um..."checking the oil".)
Boy, was I disappointed.
