Peacocks lose their tail feathers just before monsoon season and grow them back after.
The tails would be too heavy when wet to be able to fly.
Something I learned on a trip to India.

that in most animals, especially birds, the males put on a display to attract females, while among humans, it's the females who gussy up to attract the males.
