(25,861 posts)I was pretty sure from the very beginning what the twist was going to be. Although it was well done.

(14,972 posts)The selection of shots/voice over bits/flashbacks/still-shots/slo-mo, plus the little bit of live-action suspense.... very well done.
And after your first viewing it makes you say "I gotta watch this over again, it will be a totally different movie" -- which is a good marker for a effective twist ending.

(14,972 posts)In my opinion -- and I recognize this might vary quite a bit between viewers depending on their world-view/biases/preconceptions/philosophies/values/etc -- I found all of the characters somewhat degraded, less likable, and so forth once the twist is revealed. For me some of the characters who had been admirable become merely pitiable, and some of the characters who had been pitiable become contemptible... but for me nobody is elevated in esteem in any way by the twist.
But I can see that people with different values would conclude otherwise, and perhaps some would find something more laudable in some of these characters post-twist.
I shall not be more specific to keep in the spirit of 'no spoilers' but I like twist endings better when my opinions/notions are a bit more jumbled up by the twist rather than just slid downhill (or just uphill for that matter).

(14,972 posts)I'm no prude, but the movie was rated R (IIRC) and based on the trailers was obviously a suspense/horror film, and I was at the last showing of the night -- maybe 10PM or so -- and I was in a very over-protective/yuppie/helicopter-parenty kind of town. About 1/3 of the adult couples/groups in line had a kid the age of the main character or younger. I could understand if they'd seen it already and decided it was okay for their kids, but it was opening night so that's unlikely. Whatever.
Anyway, I've seen/heard a lot of people say this ending was trite/obvious, but I thought it was very effective not so much on the grounds of surprise but because of how significantly it changes the dynamic between all the major characters in the majority of the preceding scenes.

(14,972 posts)The are more scenes, for example, of a character having a black eye whilst talking to another character than there are of said character getting said black eye.
That said, there are a couple very brief shots (a few seconds) of graphic violence or its aftermath. And if it is a concern, a few seconds of sexual content as well. But the general aesthetic of the main part of the film is dirty and grimy and everything feels more tainted than an objective tabulation of on-screen action would indicate.
As far as twists go, Fight Club is more of a third act twist than twist ending -- but a good twist nonetheless. And the aftermath of the twist is pleasingly frantic, well-edited, and as noted above ends with a great music cue.
And, I'd recommend this film just for the 3 main performances. If you've ever seen Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, or Helena Bonham Carter in anything and mildly enjoyed them onscreen, then this film is probably worth your time. Ed Norton and HBC in particular really nail it, especially in hindsight of the twist.

Saw a really good one at Seattle Film Festival two years ago that never made it to general distribution called West of Redemption. Shame it never was released because it was one ending you never saw coming.
It's always a good movie when the end surprises you.

(15,383 posts)Ha-ha. Where's my knee (slaps knee)?
I'd have to say, "Sixth Sense," but more for the memory of how I saw it than the twist at the end. I went to see it with my girlfriend at the time who was getting a PhD in psychology and the rest of the graduate students in her department. When it's revealed that the mom killed that one little girl whose ghost visited the kid who saw dead people, literally, my entire row (except me) gasped as one and exclaimed, "Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome!" which set me to laughing until tears came out of my eyes, so I'm sure we seemed a strange group to others in the theater.

(2,682 posts)that had a twisted ending: Dogville. Odd movie, not filmed in usual set/scenery but filmed on a bare sound stage with buildings outlined on the floor with paint. Looks more like a play than a movie. It starts out very civil and takes some interesting turns after that. I really liked it, but have to admit, it was weird. And then there's the ending!! Also with an interesting cast: Lauren Bacall, Ben Gazzara, James Caan, Blair Brown and Patricia Clarkson.

However, unexpected events force Fergus to decide what he wants for the future, and ultimately what his nature dictates he must do."

Because it is filmed in black and white and is relatively short (71 minutes), it reminded me of the old "theatre" shows from 1950's.

(14,624 posts)In the 1950s, Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) is a New York private detective hired by a man (Robert De Niro) to track down the singer Johnny Favorite. However, everybody that Angel questions about Favorite seems to meet a tragic demise. Eventually the trail leads Angel to New Orleans where he learns that Favorite had dabbled in the black arts. As Favorite's whereabouts and true identity become clear, Angel learns that being hired by DeNiro's character was not a random choice.
