"Rocket 88" ( originally written as Rocket "88" ) is a rhythm and blues song that was first recorded in Memphis, Tennessee, on March 3 or 5, 1951 (accounts differ). The recording was credited to Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats, who were actually Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm.
The record reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart. Many music writers acknowledge its importance in the development of rock and roll music, with several considering it to be the first rock and roll record (although "Rock Awhile"released 2 years earlieris often cited as a better candidate).[1][2][3] In 2018, the song was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Singles.[4]
Many writers have suggested that "Rocket 88" has strong claims to be called the first rock'n'roll record, but others take a more nuanced view. Charlie Gillett, writing in 1970 in The Sound of the City, said that it was "one of several records that people in the music business cite as 'the first rock'n'roll record'".[19] It has been suggested by Larry Birnbaum that the idea that "Rocket 88" could be called "the first rock'n'roll record" first arose in the late 1960s; he argued that: "One of the reasons is surely that Kizart's broken amp anticipated the sound of the fuzzbox, which was in its heyday when "Rocket 88" was rediscovered."[20]

Rocket 88 in considered by some as the first R&R song however there are others too, some of which are earlier than Ike Turner's band.
Have a little taste & play loud! Old R&B from that era, once called "race music" is amazing stuff! I wish this stuff got radio play because to me, these are the real oldies, not that 60s British invasion crap lol
This song, "Good Rockin' Tonight" by Wynonie is a cover of the Roy Brown song which was more of a jazz track than R&R from Roy but Wynonie Harris changed it up. For those of you who aren't familiar with Wynonie Harris, go youtube him! He is KILLER!
This track by Doc Starkes & His Night Riders (which I always thought was an odd name to use for band to use especially given they are African-American & what era this is and how "Night Riders" is a reference to the KKK) is rather rare and was used in the movie "Cry Baby" with Johnny Depp, it also isn't available on the soundtrack for the film. It's a wild song!
