(182,865 posts)was that there really wasn't a lot there. His talent and Dunaway's and the director made what could have been a looooong drawn out film into one that was compelling.

(18,481 posts)Trivia:
Robert Redford was drawn to the film because, "It's a thinking man's action film. That was the basic draw to the project."
The filmmakers call this a companion piece to Robert Redford's Three Days of the Condor (1975).
The scene where Robert Redford's character asks Brad Pitt's character if he knew anybody in 'this apartment house' and tells him to be up on one of the balconies in five minutes is from a book by former Mossad agent Victor Ostrovsky who describes this test as part of the training of a Mossad agent.
I'm also a David Hemmings fan.

(52,286 posts)brilliant score that fit even though it was technically the wrong time period (ragtime was closer to the 1890s than the 1920s).
con upon con. we think we're in on it, but even the audience gets conned (the glove).
amazing acting, legendary cast, fantastic costumes and scenes, great script, and a plot that's intricate but actually works.
really hard to find a better all-around movie, imho.
Awsi Dooger
(14,565 posts)One of my all time favorites.
Only thing I didn't like in that movie was, "Place it on Lucky Dan."
Gamblers and schemers would never be that sloppy, to rely on one-word being recognized as a "place" wager instead of a win wager, not with so much at stake. There would have been very specific lengthy dialog on the matter.
Besides, large place wagers are very rare and would trigger suspicion immediately in a joint like that. Win is best value and bridge jumpers bet to show.

(527 posts)I've watched it more than any other movie by far.....Spend a lot of time up in the same area it was filmed, four corners, the Wasatch and Zion.

(18,481 posts)Same screenwriter in Sniper (1993)
You can tell when the director and screenwriter understand each other and agree on the characters and plot. Giving credit where it is due, Redford's delivery and timing along with expressions and mannerisms are so well composed and executed few others could give an equal performance.
re: sig line - Daniel Webster was an amazing Senator. This country is lucky to have had him. Thanks and take care.

I wish we still had his bud, Paul Newman around, but I am selfish enough to wish we'd benefit from Redford for many many years to come.

(7,286 posts)A great movie with RR in it (1)*
OR
A great movie because RR is in it (2)**
1. Out of Africa- Meryl Streep steals the show. Anybody could have played RR's role, maybe even better. But still one of my favorite literary movies of all time
2. Jerimiah Johnson-RR makes it a great movie
My favorite scene goes something like this
JJ: how goes the war?
Pilgrim: what war?
JJ: the war between the president of the united states and the president of Mexico
Pilgrim: Why.....it's been over some time now.
(long pause)
JJ : who won?
