I was standing in a line to get into SIGGRAPH in Los Angeles... with a co-worker who was a huge Grateful Dead fan... he used to follow them on tour from venue to venue. Anyway, he just couldn't believe it. Many people standing in line were openly crying.

I was on tour that summer but got off at Shoreline. My female companion called me from work. Ill tell the whole story on the ninth. Ill say this though. In some huge ways, Jerry passing opened a lot of musical doors. The psychedelic scene sort of exploded. Not only Phish, who were around but with the Dead not constantly touring (they do tour and have since 96 in some configuration, now with John Mayer) it allowed a lot of bands to have fans. We saw the blossoming of Leftover Salmon, Widespread panic, String Cheese Incident, Moe and then all the various Dead tribute bands like DSO and Joe Russos Almost Dead not to mention all the local bands (around Sacramento we have at least 50). Then there are all the festivals, one of which I am going to in a minute and then tomorrow in SF. The week between his birthday and his passing is known as "The Days Between" after one of his more beloved ballads.

the Blues because we had a lot of mainstream and blues festivals coming up. I was in the garage cutting mattes, building frames, framing when I got the call. For me it was, thought to be anyway, a financial hit. But it expanded my scope. Like I said, all of a sudden these bands sart catching everyonees ears. The Mother Hips. Aquarium Rescue Unit. bela Fleck. Yonder Mountain String Band. So many bands stepped up.

For me it was leftover Salmon. After jerry died, I could not listen to the Dead, my traveling music. Phish was too intense. Zappa, too weird. Someone got me a tape of LoS at some bar in Colorado. The funniest show. Blistering bluegrass cajun rock and roll. And they were hilarious. Banjovie, Mark Vann who was even weirder than Bela Fleck. That became my traveling music. I got their other stuff but that was gold.
Ive seen them at least 100 times at festivals and on a Riverboat in New Orleans where every song was about New orleans or rivers or (you get the theme). Ive seen members die, leave, temporary fill ins, Bill Payne from Little Feat, . Sit ins with a ton of people. And now with this crazy new keyboard player, they might be better than ever.

Jerry pioneered the model. Make fans for life. Be different every night. One fan tells another. There are ups and downs of course (Why Leftover Salmon never became the biggest band in the universe still bewilders me) but You get your fans that dig you, keep it different and there ya go. Do your own thing completely, records etc....

But when Jerry died in rehab that day, so did The Grateful Dead.

He was truly "one in a million!""
