Which charity would you give to first, and how much?

(11,875 posts)then the ACLU, a lot of protesters are going to go to jail before this is over...then selected animal rescue orgs. Finally, I would set up an arts scholarship.

(1,303 posts)food banks that operate strictly from charity and donations to feed people in small communities. The one closest to me runs a new to you shop with volunteers selling clothing and small items donated to them to fund the food bank next door that is open a couple days a week and run by volunteers.

As for an 'organized' charity,

Many of these wildlife protectors are murdered themselves by poachers, and the surviving families end up poor and destitute.

(6,124 posts)I'd give a big bunch of it to the local animal shelter so they could build on to it and then some to the Alzheimer's foundation. Of course, I'd keep some for myself. I'm not a saint.

A HERETIC I AM
(24,372 posts)structured to be perpetual, ie; via an investment trust, so that interested students would be supplied with musical instruments for low or no cost. It would also cover the cost of the salary of one or more music teachers, if the district didn't supply one. $5 million in a portfolio yielding 4 to 5% should do it easily.
When I was in elementary school and Jr. High back in the 60's and 70's, school districts commonly had music programs. It's my understanding that those are few and far between these days.
Other giving would be to organizations like Safesipp which addresses the critical issue of clean drinking water in the developing world.

(19,257 posts)Because I believe we've crossed the threshold where we can no longer stop it, only blunt the worst of it from killing billions in the next century.
Also, buy thousands of acres of farmland, rent out portions of it to small, organic growers, and spend the next 50 years converting the rest into restored oak savanna, wetlands, hardwood forest and prairie (the native ecosystems that used to exist here).

(14,275 posts)I would anonymously establish a scholarship fund at the university and graduate school I attended to fund seniors who have run out of money. An anonymous donor awarded me $500 in my senior year. That allowed me to graduate and go onto the graduate school I had been accepted to. That $500 cash award allowed me to eat for 3 months. Had that not happened, I might have been forced to drop out and my future would have taken a wildly different path.
