(18,837 posts)The album, as well as Lennon during his "lost weekend" phase in L.A. and Nilsson himself, stands as a cautionary tale against excess in all forms. This wasn't a career peak for either of the musicians. But at the time, it stood as one of the more amusing moments from the album.
Some Bob songs probably came off better in the hands of others. This one, I think, is better left with Bob. R.E.M. and Billy Joel both took a shot at "laundry list" songs, this one still reigns supreme.

(12,412 posts)held a contest for the first person to send in the lyrics. They played the song every day after schools got out and needless to say many minds were blown in the Wilmington, Delaware area.
This was obviously pre recording devices or access to lyrics the way we would now. We had to sit in our cars and listen very closely. We had a team with each person trying to write down individual verses. I do not remember how the contest ended, but I do remember each and every word.
