I am having trouble finding the author because there is another book that is more current that keeps gobbling up the google searches. Anyone remember it? Or have you read it?

I read it sometime ago and I remember wondering if it's a period piece that wouldn't play well today. It's is claimed to be based on the author's autobiography. Basically, as I understand it, it's a story about how a Jewish man, who saw how anglos used prejudices about Jews in the Lower East Side ghetto to recruit them to do their dirty work, managed to overcome his apprehensions and embraced the anglo surburbs because it would provide a better life for his children.

Here's the synopsis:

It is said to be autobiographical and tells the story of George Hurst, a Jewish man who rose up out of the Lower East Side ghetto, married a Christian woman and learned to overcome his fear of anti-Semitism.
