We haven't even had the worst of it in Boston yet, but I just hate the heat. I'm uncomfortable when it goes above 75 degrees F. I can't sleep because I am too hot and I even have the AC on.
It's an older building and the AC is not very powerful in weather like this, so I have some ice packs that I put in flannel pillow cases to put around my neck and shoulders to keep me cool.
Anyway, what is your weather like and do you like or hate the heat?
madamesilverspurs
(15,805 posts)I live about an hour north of Denver, and when I went to the grocery store about 4pm the thermometer read 109. Immensely uncomfortable. And our usual hot months are July and August.
Can't afford to run the AC, so I keep a fan blowing directly on me. When it gets terribly unbearable, I stick a frozen 2 liter water bottle in a dish pan in front of the fan, it actually helps quite a bit.
Definitely not a fan of heat, much prefer cooler weather. When there's a chill in the air, I can always add layers of clothing. But in the heat, there's only so much I can take off without getting arrested. So for now, I just keep reminding myself that this won't last forever. But I am growing weary of this Chinese climate hoax...

(102,292 posts)And as much as I love Colorado, this intense heat is dismal. Likewise not using the A/C, but have a freezer full of flexible cold packs I put under my back and even sleep with one under my face with overhead fan and two others blowing .
Yesterday the driveway/parking area was so hot it was burning my pup's feet just trying to check the mail late in the afternoon.
It may be "dry" heat, but above 100, what difference does it make? Sigh...

(25,862 posts)Right now I'm in Overland Park, KS, and it is fucking hot. I HATE hot weather. I have long said that my idea of the perfect apartment is a walk-in refrigerator. I'm miserable, although at least my sister (whom I'm staying with) has a/c.
Nearly 50 years ago, when I first lived in the Washington DC area, I was in an apartment without a/c. I was a whole lot younger then, and somehow I survived. Although that was before significant global warming.
Sigh. I can hardly wait to get back to Santa Fe.

(478 posts)I've lived in Santa Fe for 28 years now. Spent 3 weeks last month in KC helping my brother recover from hip surgery. Weather was good then but it's not now. Having grown up in The Midwest, I can affirm that "it's not the heat it's the humidity." So much better here in the high desert. Hot afternoons, but as soon as the Sun goes down, the temperature plummets. Open windows and fans blowing in the cool night air and I'm good to go for the the afternoon.

(15,682 posts)For most of my life I've had the most unbelievable head splitting migraines. They always make me burning hot. I have honestly worried about spontaneously combusting the heat is so bad. People have just laughed at me - but I'm telling the truth.
And I do the same as you. On hot nights I use ice packs in cool cotton pillow cases wrapped around the back of my neck and then straight freezing packs directly on my face and the pulsating eye (usually always the left side). I keep a fan in the window blowing directly on me, even during the winter when it's too cold for anyone else in the house. I keep it up in the summer too even with good AC. I start getting over heated at 72 degrees.
So a few weeks ago I took a family vacation in Myrtle Beach, S.C. where it was hot as hell with something like 85 to 90% humidity. I'm back home now in Huntington Beach, So Cal, about an 8th of a mile from the water. Yay! Chilly breezes every day so far, after the clouds burn off. It will get hot, though, by August. 107 degrees last year. A long month.

(63,221 posts)do this too so maybe I'm not so strange after all. I think 72 is about my upper limit as well. I love it when it is in the 60's. My office was really warm so I called facilities and they said the indoor thermostat was set at 72!
I told them to turn it down to 66, but they thought that was too cold, so we agreed on 68 which is room temp. It's fairly comfortable, but I still hear people whining about how cold it is.

(205,473 posts)It's supposed to be in the mid to high 90s, record breaking temperatures, after a horrible winter that had unprecedented snowstorms and record breaking low temperatures. The weather extremes in my neck-of-the-woods tell me that something unusual is going on. This week I passed by the amusement park where I used to have my summer job and I was wondering how they manage working outdoors now. It was tough enough for me as Cinderella, standing out in the hot sun in a long dress. I'm wondering if attendance will be down, we thought it was hot then, but nothing like this!
Heat advisory issued through weekend
Heat advisories are rare for upstate New York. Advisories that extend for three days are even more unusual.
That's what a potentially record-breaking heat wave will bring to the Glens Falls region between Saturday and Monday, with temperatures in the mid- to high 90s forecast for Sunday and Monday. The National Weather Service issued the advisory that is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Monday night.
High humidity will push head indices over 100 degrees for some parts of the region, and that level of heat can be dangerous to those who are exposed to it.
"A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible," the weather service advisory reads.

(205,473 posts)My boss would send his mechanics around with "salt pills" back when I was driving the train, but it went through the "jungle" (woods ) and a couple of tunnels, so it wasn't like I was just standing out in the sun like some were. And there were always rainy stretches that cooled things off, nothing like now with stretches of 90-degrees plus!
My cousin - the closest I have to a sister - is stopping by tomorrow on her way back from a vacation in Old Forge to her current home in Connecticut. My suggestion was meeting up for lunch at this nice new diner that's right by the exit so she wouldn't have to take the time driving around, but she informed me she's bringing her puppy with her! I told her there was no way she could leave the pup in the car for even a few minutes, especially in this weather, and even eating outside would be unbearable, so I'm making lunch!

(63,221 posts)streaks that we are having now. Your cousin is coming back from Old Forge? That is in my neck of the woods. (205,473 posts)My aunt wore long underwear under her dress and my Dad gave his overcoat to my grandmother! There was a three-piece group that played briefly during the ceremony and if looks could kill, LOL! Everyone wanted that overwith so we could get back inside! My grandmother was supposed to read something, too, but the family friend who was officiating skipped right over her! She finally got her chance when we were comfortably back inside...
And it is a beautiful area, I do remember hiking there when my extended family rented a cabin - I was pretty young and my memory of that trip was sliding down a mountainside in the mud and grabbing my mother's leg to stop my slide! She was not happy with me!
I spent my summers growing up at a girls' camp in Vermont on Lake Champlain. I don't remember too many hot days, when I look at the old photos I'm usually wearing long pants and a jacket!

(12,265 posts)The two combined has made it miserable. Today is supposed to be 96 with 70 percent humidity. I actually prefer cold weather to this mess. It is the same outcome, you don't see anyone outside, not even kids playing and to me it seems to be so much worse. Our grass is usually dormant by now, but no, due to all the rain we have been getting it is green and needing to be mowed at least once a week. It is my husband's turn to mow this week, I am staying inside with my fan.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)I just feel so disgusting when I am sweaty. I basically stay in my air conditioned apartment with the fan on because it's so unpleasant outside. At least in cold weather you can put more clothes on or pile on the blankets. In the heat, you can only take so much off.

(5,101 posts)I don't like much heat too.
Ice packs around your neck is not a very good idea because you force your organism to raise its temperature to maintain it constant.
Some advice in case of a heat wave:
Wear light, covering and loose clothing. Avoid synthetic materials. Choose good quality linen, cotton or wool. These fibers have thermal regulation properties.
Avoid iced drinks and prefer hot drinks like herbal teas or tea as long as it is light, not too hot, rather warm. It's better to avoid coffee and alcohol. Eat normally, vegetables and fruit are interesting because they contain a lot of water.
Keep windows and shutters closed during the day. Aerate very early in the morning or in the evening when it is cooler. Air conditioning is to be avoided. On the one hand, it is not very healthy and on the other, it is an ecological disaster. An inexpensive way to cool the air: put a bottle of frozen water in face the fan, it will cool the air.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)I didn't know that about the ice packs, thanks for the tip. They just help me to cool down enough so that I can sleep.
I always wear a light, loose cotton shirt in this weather - no knits or anything clingy. However, I can't think of drinking anything hot. One of my most "American" traits is drinking ice cold drinks all the time.
I always have a bottle of ice water with me and I always love tons of ice in anything else I drink. When I studied in Austria, my host family would always comment on my ice use and tell me it was so unhealthy (yet they chain smoked cigarettes ) I think Europeans don't really like iced drinks very much. Here, we seem to love them. I like eating salads and cold vegetables in this weather though. Hot food doesn't really appeal to me.
What is the weather like there in Belgium? Are you staying cool? Hope all is well with you!

(32,006 posts)I can't work outdoors, and running errands is just miserable, so I just stay inside. Luckily I have things I enjoy doing inside like reading and a couple other hobbies. The humidity lately has been choking. This weekend in NE Ohio the heat index is supposed to be near 100.
I hate heat and humidity and actually prefer fall and winter. We don't get spring anymore for much more than a week. It seems to go from winter straight to summer these days. Hot, humid weather doesn't bother my husband like it bothers me. He can go outside and do yard work in the middle of the afternoon on a hot summer day and not pass out like I would! I keep telling him to take it easy, he's not so young any more (neither of us are) but he's always done that and it just doesn't bother him. Also, I hate cooking dinner on a day when it's in the 90s. I have fans in my kitchen and a lot of windows ....the a/c never seems to be strong enough in the kitchen.
A big shout out to all the heat and humidity haters out there!
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)LOVE the heat. I really don't get it. I find it suffocating and I hate feeling sweaty and sluggish in the hot weather. There is nothing worse than taking a shower and then 30 minutes later feeling like you need another shower again. I love spring, but it is so short-lived her in the northeast. Fall is my favorite season because we get a good few months of cool, dry weather when I enjoy being outside the most.
Anyway, try to stay cool! Fall will be here soon enough!

(62,423 posts)for one thing, school was closed.
But mostly I hate the heat, the humidity, the bugs, the allergies, the long days (more than 14 hours is too much for me), cutting the damned grass - I could go on.
This year the heat has been outrageous. Iowa used to get maybe half a dozen days above 90 in a season - we have already had 10 or so this year with the bulk of summer to come. Temps used to be in the low to mid 80s, now it is mostly upper 80s.
September used to be mild or cool - now it is another month of summer. The leaves don't even start turning til mid-October now and don't fall until November.
I hate to sit in a closed in house - we do that all winter. But the choice is that or suffer.
98 or so expected today

(63,221 posts)Flying insects - flies and mosquitoes - I can't stand them. I live in a city and I don't remember having a such a problem with them as we have this year. I live on the 8th floor, but I don't have screens in my windows (should probably just buy some) so a few get in every now and then. It never really seemed to be a problem before this year.
The heat tends to make me feel itchy anyway and just the sight of a mosquito or one bite can drive me mad with itchiness. When I go up to Maine to visit my sister it's even worse. There are bugs everywhere! Especially at night. They have a great deck and a pool, but I can't spend much time out there because I can't deal with the flying insects.

(34,111 posts)I think we hit 113 HI last year once and only once. We have hardly been out of the 90's since May. Way out of the norm. It is hard to deal with, especially while working but I have devised ways over the years to deal with the heat. I still hate it but it is what it is. We do not air condition our house until we are over 90 degrees outside. I can keep it cool when it cools at night. That is the worst of this, it does not cool down at night much anymore. We are cooling to the 80's the last few nights, that is NOT NORMAL! If it gets to the 70's we can keep the house going with window covers and closing up early when it is cool. That also helps, being in very cool temps then going out is killer.
You would be able to do it if you lived in it. Not happily but it is doable. I am struggling to keep old animals alive in this so it is worth it.
