Thought I did a good deed at a big box DIY store today.

Sweaty, filthy dirty, miserable, hot, bad back...looking at the bagged soil.

A sweet little old lady, in her late hundreds, weighing about 110 pounds, asked me if she could ask me a question.

Of course, I said.

She had questions about the different kinds of soil, and I answered her questions the best I could. She thanked me profusely, and apologized for wasting my time. I told her not to be silly, and that it was lovely talking to her.

I got my one bag of soil onto my cart, moaning because my back hurt. I then headed to the checkout line.

While in line, I made a mental note that despite my bad back, I would seek out this 110 pound lady in her late hundreds after I checked out, and help her to load her soil into her vehicle...because she was so sweet and all.

I looked over to my left, and saw this same lady picking up several 50 pound bags of soil and heave them into her cart like they were marshmallows. I half expected her to start twirling them on her fingertip, like a basketball.

I was bested by a 300 year old lady.

While at a convenience store, my brother saw your new friend’s mother (350 year old lady) reach down and pick up a penny.

Brother says “that’s my penny”

Old lady shaking her cane “come and get it boy!”

My brother is 55. Us and that old lady were cracking up.

I know many tough, strong, lively, capable women "in their late hundreds" here in Vermont. In fact, one helped rescue me last week when she barreled into my yard, hauled her electric lawnmower out of her truck, and did what my broken mower couldn't. Another friend, nearly 78, recently bought a used stuffed chair and ottoman at a thrift shop and simply tossed them in the back of her Subaru.

We've got OLP.....Old Lady Power.

I've been fortunate to have people offer to help me carry heavy items or load them into my car. Then, it dawned on me that I must have suddenly started looking old. I didn't feel old. However, I took a look in the mirror and discovered...darn, I DO look old.

It kind of hits you suddenly when you were still feeling 33. It happens, and it takes your breath away.

Maybe next time, she can help YOU! Just thinkin'.
