Essie Davis is a delight as the plucky, slightly scandalous Phryne Fisher. It's a fun, light confection, perfect for early summer viewing.
From imdb:
"A female sleuth sashays through the back lanes and jazz clubs of Melbourne in the late 1920s, fighting injustice with her pearl-handled pistol and her dagger-sharp wit."
Stars: Essie Davis, Nathan Page, Hugo Johnstone-Burt

(66,381 posts)I'm in love with Phryne Fisher!...
Essie Davis also appeared in The Girl With The Pearl Earring as Vermeer's wife.
I was shocked to learn the same actress played both parts.
Two characters more different from each other than Miss Fisher and Vermeer's pallid, unpleasant, and emotionally unstable wife can scarcely be imagined.

(34,398 posts)I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out where I'd seen the actor who plays Hugh Collins, then it dawned on me--he was the daughter's potential boyfriend/sidekick in "San Andreas." (I plead guilty of doing that a lot--recognizing actors then placing them in other movies I've seen, lol) I would've never recognized Essie Davis as Vermeer's wife. You described the character perfectly. I like her even more now.
