Very faithful to the book, and the three-plus hour length really helps it work to a satisfying conclusion.

But yes, it's pretty much the greatest revenge story ever told.

Denzel nailed it!
The Denzel version isn't the first. There was a Scot Glen version prior, in the '90s I think.

Another good quote:
Elderly Man: In the church, they say to forgive.
Creasy: Forgiveness is between them and God. It's my job to arrange the meeting.

I recall a movie I saw as a child, a western. The man had a baby, and the baby was sick- cholera, maybe. People would not help him, wouldn't give him milk for the baby. After the baby died, he went back and killed them. I distinctly remember a scene in which he drowned someone in a bucket of milk.

Anyone else see it? Know the name of it?

You are right. Watched it later uncut and was shocked. Two things though. There is the suggestion she was his killer's lover and she sent him to his death. And, the indifference of the town's people to the rape parallels their indifference to his killing. I wish the scene was never there, but, had I read of it in a book telling this story, I don't think it would have been so traumatic to envision.

Same thing with Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds." The theater scene where all the nazis get snuffed was satisfying, in a depraved kinda way.
