Hey Homebound Memorial Day celebrators..Thought another lyric challenge will keep us entertained.
Post a song lyric you love. Put no titles or artists in the post.
If you want to guess someone's lyric, do not answer in the Thread Title. Place answers only in the body of the post so other people can have the opportunity of guess. ( Don't worry, some make that mistake. Someone will remind you not to post song title in thread title).
Repeats from other challenges okay. Try not to be too obscure, as half the fun is finding a kindred spirit who knows your tune. However, one person's obscure is another's playlist favorite.
I will start with a few songs:
1. And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind her tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years (Super Band for eternity)
2. Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
3. World pollution, there's no solution
Institution, electrocution
Just black and white, rich or poor
Them and us, stop the war (70's)

80's. Obscure to Americans I think. Although one song by this group, I've heard too often on a recent commercial
3. [(What did you do there?)] I got high
[(What did you feel there?)] Well, I cried
[(But why the tears there?)] Tell you why
It's all too beautiful

It's all too beautiful
It's all too beautiful

It don't worry 'bout where it's going, no, no.
Don't fly, mister blue bird, I'm just walking down the road,
Early morning sunshine tell me all I need to know (Really famous group)
2.Well is it any wonder that the stars don't just rush by
When you're only doin' 60 through this oh-so-vacant night
But it's lackin' something big this time
What the hell did you expect to find?
Aphrodite on a barstool by your side
Twelfth night we go
After something everyone should know
Somewhere in the distance out of sight
Then I saw gin mill rainfall
What do you remember if at all? 80's
3. When I think of Heaven, deliver me in a black-winged bird
I think of flying down in your sea of pens and feathers
And all other instruments of faith and sex and God
In the belly of a black-winged bird
Don't try to feed me
'Cause I've been here before
And I deserve a little more 80's

Hint 1: When this UK group's 2nd record was a smash hit in the 1980's, they re-released this gem from their first album, and it was another hit for them.
Hint 2: The average person would likely guess the song title is derived from the chorus, which connotes 'being fixated on someone', but it's really named for the first 4 words of the song, which are repeated to begin another of the later verses as well.
Hint 3: The video features the singer riding in a limousine, and messing with their hair in dramatic fashion, multiple times ...

as he
sings his tale of woe
nobody sees him coming
and nobody sees him go
so hey there mister don't ya look so sad
don't look so ill at ease
i can play you any song you like
to cheer up this life you lead ...
Super Extra Bonus Points if you can name the original songwriter w/o looking it up ... also, these are the lyrics of the songwriter, the 'popular version' varies slightly from these ...
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)The 'hit' version was on the first (only?) solo album by youthful, handsome singer of a hugely successful British rock group.
The songwriter (who recorded it himself a bit later) was kinda a cheeseball British pop singer with a high voice who had some MASSIVE hits in the mid-late 70's, then everyone decided he was way uncool. Appeared on like the Muppets and stuff.
A few more lyrics ...
you find a nice soft corner
and ya set right down
take up your guitar and play
til policeman comes and says 'move along'
so ya
move along all day ...
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)and now that glory train
it don't stop here no more
now I look at the years gone by
and wonder at the powers that be
i don't know why fortune smiles on some

(33,643 posts)This was the last song, on the last album, by this MEGA SELLING band ... well, the last album of the 'classic' 1970's edition of their career. They still play shows (a lot) and have put out 1 album since, like 30 years after the album that this particular song ... was the last song on, at the end of the 1970's.
I'll give ya a few moar lyrics ...
out of the shiny night
the rain was softly falling
the tracks that ran down the boulevard
had all been washed away
out of the silver light
the past came softly calling
and i remembered the times we spent
outside ...
mr_lebowski

Though it's something of a cheat as it's their greatest hits ... not a regular studio album ...

(28,817 posts)For me... Deacon Blue makes no sense... Crimson Tide or the Deep Blue Sea. That's what I hear, that's what makes sense. Steely not my favorite.

(33,643 posts)"they got a name for the winners in the world
and i want a name when i lose
they call Alabama the Crimson Tide
(so) call me Deacon Blues"
The U of Alabama collegiate sports programs name is The Crimson Tide. And their football program is a perennially successful one (winners).
'Deacon Blues' is a phrase akin to 'King of Pop' ... and when you 'lose', you might want to sing The Blues.
I don't think they sing 'so' right there, but I've always thought 'it's implied'.
See, it's not total nonsense at least
I don't like worship the Dan like some, but they had a lotta great tunes over the years. Aja is really good album top to bottom, IMHO. Probably the only one I've heard the whole thing TBH.

(2,404 posts)I'm a huge SD fan. Considering that both Aja and Two Against Nature won albums of the year at the Grammies, SD are no light weights. They are very sophisticated in both music and lyrics. And how can you not like a band named after a dildo?

I was really into The Royal Scam and named my pet kitty Aja back in the day... you have freaked me out.

(2,404 posts)As you might already know, Steely Dan were quite literary. There is a novel by (i think) Edgar Rice Burroughs called "The Naked Lunch.. In it there is a paragraph about this woman who has a favorite dildo that she calls Steely Dan. It is a pretty pornographic page. Anyway... Both Donald Fagan and Walter Becker have referred to it several times as the origin of their name. Pretty funny. I'll post a reference if available.

(28,817 posts)U2. Isn't this one of those songs without the title words in the song?

It's a one-word title, and it's something that flies ...
Well, flies ... with a little help.
Have you ever seen the U2 Go Home - Live at Slane Castle DVD? It's freaking AWESOME. From that show, this is the definitive version of this song, IMHO. This was <2 weeks after Bono's dad passed away, so it's pretty damn moving ... usually chokes me up a little actually. Reminds me, I need to call my dad.

And since this is much covered, bonus points for the original songwriter (the only version that exists for me)

Jewel cover of song was used to great effect In the move Phenomenon. Tear jerker movie, but I loved it.

(33,643 posts)Well done ... love that record ... more college daze. Also love the follow-up Slow Turning ...both were on heavy rotation circa 1987 ...
Ry Cooder + John Hiatt = Win
Fact is it's just an amazing song as long as you don't change it much and sing it well, it's going to be good. Jewel's is no exception.
But I felt like it was 'my gem' for a long time til suddenly it 'got famous' (kinda like 'Thing Called Love', also his song, also the original version appearing on this record), so ... not even sure it was ever released as a single from John. Just a man and his piano, his voice, and his heart on his sleeve.
So f***ing good.
For any of you who've never heard the original, sung by the songwriter ...

Live - Lightning Crashes
Damn solid album ... Pillar of Davidson is probably my favorite tune ... even though I'm atheist and usually don't like 'christian rock', that song should be a primer on 'how to do christian rock w/o sucking'.

Your friends U2 have some pretty strong Christian leanings as well, thought I suppose they never had that label attached.
