Hello, everyone! I'm a prog-loving prog, and after lurking here for a while, I decided to take the plunge and join.

(16,383 posts)I've lived in the Denver/Boulder area since 1981, though. Your part of TN is much prettier than where I grew up.

(18,837 posts)Or, perhaps you MIGHT want to get me started.
Moved to California, immediately fell into a circle of friends that introduced me to Yes (saw them live), Genesis (saw them on the Wind & Wuthering tour and Gabriel's first solo tour with Fripp) and King Crimson. Pink Floyd, of course, but even though they get labeled "prog," I sort of view them in a category of their own.
Years later, I was the Webmaster for a local CD store. They had a Prog Section. I thought "Why the hell do they need a whole section for those three bands" (plus ELP...I was never a big ELP fan because I needed electric guitar solos).
That's when I found out about the "second wave"...Spock's Beard, Dream Theater, Flower Kings, Marillion, Fish post-Marillion, Jadis, RPWL. Those were the first bands I got into, discovered many more after that.
Welcome to DU.

(143 posts)I wonder if your CD store's prog section included prog metal bands like Dream Theater, Queensryche, and Fates Warning?

(18,837 posts)That's where I learned about all of the sub-genres. to give you an idea of the size of the section, it was a standard wooden display like you'd have in Tower or any other store, each bay about arm's length, and there were about 25 bays.
So, you like Dream Theater, and then you find out that Kevin Moore did the OSI thing after leaving, so you buy that, on and on and on. Every band led to another band. And the thing is that the store managers knew all of these connections, they were brilliant. If you found out about OSI, you didn't have to go hunting for it. It was right there under the tab marked "OSI." Also, there's the Fates Warning connection (Jim Matheos), so if you liked OSI, you'd check out Fates Warning, on and on and on and on.
I remember buying Queensryche in the store, it was in the regular rock section. Same for Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, because they were so mainstream. The Prog section was mainly the second-wave bands I named, plus prog metal, "symphonic prog" (largely Genesis, ELP and Yes clones), all of it. Everything.

(903 posts)Have you come across Wax Fang? I believe they're in Kentucky. I've really enjoyed The Astronaut (reminds me of Nektar's Journey to the Center of the Eye), and much of their earlier stuff.

(143 posts)Generally I prefer less electronic sounds in my prog, but this group has the songwriting skills to compensate.
A HERETIC I AM

BUT.....
After all the "Welcome!" greetings like your fucking Edmund Hillary and all that bullshit, I'm here to ground you.
Make sure you have ten fingers and toes. You're gonna need them
Don't disparage cats, even though they are filthy, nasty animals with few redeeming characteristics useful to modern humans. Dogs are far superior, but don't say so in the Lounge and don't tell anyone I said that, for fucks sake.
Some people are not worth interacting with, including me.
But I am funny, so there is that.
Have patience and learn how to be humble. Some on this board are so full of themselves and their correctness, it's hard to stay afloat. This differs from the folks that live on your own street in probably zero ways.
Have fun, but don't give up too easily.
