The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWe have hawk sightings here in New Haven.
Our neighbor who does a neighborhood watch for such things just emailed us. He warned against letting small pets out (hard to do if you have a cat). There are even reports now of hawks attacking humans.
Geez, this is something out of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds." What is going on?

(5,272 posts)I hear their cries every day in my neighborhood and have seen them carry off rabbits, squirrels and doves from my yard. There used to dozens of doves around my house until hawks and falcons became commonplace about 15 to 20 years ago.But despite the predators, there are still a healthy populatiion of squirrels, rabbits and chipmunks and all types of songbirds in yard and just this week I have spotted a fox hanging around the house looking for prey and leaving scat. I am in city, near a major highway.
I haven't heard of any incidents with hawks attacking small pets in my area as they seem to prefer wild animals and birds.. (Bears commonly roam through my neighborhood and usually don't bother any of the animals except a couple of incidents where they attacked small dogs only because the dogs were barking and aggressive to the bears.)

(16,881 posts)We have a large number of them the live on the lake next to us and we often watch them snag snakes and fish and very small critters, no clue why they would attack a human. In fact, most here seem unphased by humans, even in a residential area.

(12,160 posts)Every year around this time, flocks of raptors (hawks and eagles) circle overhead in our little town, and I fear for the kitties, bunnies and small dogs on the ground. Young birds may even try to grab prey that's too big to lift. I don't let my miniature poodle outside without me, and I carry a broom just in case.
EDIT: Also turkey vultures.
