I'm in NW Indiana a few miles from lake Michigan. So, I'm not rural, but my township just has terrible service. If you step out on the porch and fart, no power for six hours. I've been wanting one for years and finally had one installed just a few weeks ago. I was kinda glad my power went out! Now I know it works. Looks like it won't be a waste of $.

It's actually worth the investment, despite the price tag might appear to be disproportionately costly up-front. In 2005, the year before we built that house, Washington had a nasty storm. No power for more than two weeks. Two-plus feet of unplowed snow. It was horrible. My partner's antidepressant Rx needed to be refilled in betwixt and she endured cold-turkey withdrawls huddled in a sleeping bag with ice on the inside of the windows. We vowed never again.

Make sure you keep a reserve of fuel. It's worth it, just for light, heat and hot water. We ended-up having the neighbors over for "storm parties". A bit of whiskey, some games; they could take showers and do necessary laundry and the kids could find a heated respite.

I think the longest we've been out is three days. But at least 6 times a year it's out for 6-12 hours. I'm on natural gas so I guess if that goes out, I'm screwed.

That sounds about right. Typically, we were dark 1-2 days a week and fairly regularly a week straight during the winter. Rarely did we get a storm that shut five counties down for two plus weeks, but that year we did.

But still, having a good generator for heat, light and to run the pump (and the DVD player) is such a luxury.

Enjoy!
