Update on my knee surgery

Hello all,
It must be the DU love I got that made things go so well. I am STUNNED how well I'm doing . . .

I had the surgery on Monday and first thing is that he didn't use anesthesia. I don't react well to it so he went twilight along with a spinal and a local and all went well.

The only pain I had/have was from the tourniquet - all soft tissue. Doc did say it went well and I can already bend past 90 degrees and have almost all my flexion back. I also feel about 1/4" taller. I am doing my exercises daily and only taking OTC Tylenol and Motrin as needed - which is only at night. I am, however, living on the ice machine. Frankly, I feel well enough to go back to work next Thursday (1.5 weeks off) so I have 2 days working and then rest again. I do have some crud in my lungs but that's unrelated to the surgery and no fever.

As mentioned, I am a veteran of knee surgeries (4 ACLs on the left leg) and this was no different. I know healing isn't linear so some days I will regress but overall, 4 days out, I'm happy. Now I just need to watch for Keloids (damn Ehlers-Danlos) but I'm seeing a dermatologist in a month so that's taken care of. I won't drive for another week or two.

Thanks for all the DU love and support.

I bought a couple of gel ice packs and rotated them through the freezer to use after my knee replacement. Used them for a LONG time.

My only exoeriece with knee surgery is as an observer. I had a right hip replacement in 2013, which was pretty much a piece of cake. I was in a room by myself the first night. The next day, I got a roommate, who's had a knee replacement.

The poor woman was in agony. She cried, moaned, screamed, shrieked, and called for Jesus with every breath. I didn't want to be unsympathetic, but after about 30 minutes, I had to ask to be put in a different room. I got moved across the hall, and could still hear her. The IV pain meds didn't seem to make a bit of difference, and I wondered if she may have been in withdrawal from overmedicating herself at home.

I am soooooooooooooo glad your experience was better.

You might be a little more than a quarter inch taller - I'm a full inch taller than I ever was. Between the knee replacements and no longer being bow legged I got that much taller after the replacements!

I sure loved the ice machine and was disappointed when they took it away. At home I made cold packs - 1 part rubbing alcohol to 3 parts water makes a mixture that gets really cold without getting hard. One quart in a gallon ziplock bag, double bagged, makes a good size cold pack. For a knee you might want to use 2 gallon bags.

Push yourself, but not too hard!
