(9,181 posts)For a time, however, beginning in 1965 when he was drafted, I "inherited" my brother's larger Zenith. I spent many nights in northeastern Iowa listening to KAAY out of Little Rock. Later I found WLS, Chicago, CKLW, Detroit, WLW, Cincinnati, WWL, New Orleans, and occasionally WABC, New York, among others. All AM, all monaural, and coming out of a single 3 inch speaker. It was heaven.

(32,001 posts)It was fun to see how far off a station you could get at night on AM radio.... A few times I remember WABC out of New York fading in and out on my little black transistor radio. Boy did I think I was cool having a transistor radio!

(14,275 posts)And I would listen to it in bed with the speaker made for a single ear. On a clear night I could pick up staticy AM in MN from the deep south.
