But there is a region here that is known as the Red Hills that extends up into South Georgia. It's a unique geologic region with red clay hills. The red clay was pushed down from the Apalachians during the Ice Ages and overlies a karst region of limestone with sinkholes. There is much more variation in height than in most of Florida and with that and the red clay soil there is more variation in the vegetation. To me, it is the most attractive part of Florida.
Geography
Rolling hills, ravines and gullies covered by forests and the large lakes of Lake Jackson, Lake Iamonia, Lake Miccosukee, Lake Lafayette, and Lake Talquin. The highest point in the Red Hills is 280 feet (85.3m) north of Tallahassee by 10 miles. The soil is red clay deposited during the last ice age from the Appalachian Mountains. Rivers running through the Red Hills Region are the Aucilla River, Ochlockonee River, and Telogia Creek.
Features
The Red Hills Region serves as one of the highest recharge areas for the Floridan Aquifer which is critical to the drinking water supply for residents of Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. The Red Hills Region also has the largest concentration of undeveloped plantation lands in the United States. The Red Hills has been identified for special conservation efforts and the Nature Conservancy has designated the Red Hills as one of America's "Last Great Places."

Yes, I really like the redlands......i lived in cutler ridge (very close to the redlands) for 2 years. i could have bought a property in the redlands for pennies on the dollar after hurricane andrew but i didn't. i'm thinking i'd like to buy a 5 acre property there to have a place to stay when i'm back up in the US on biz trips.

(14,912 posts)farmers, and in the packing houses when construction was slow. About 80% of the winter vegetables come out of that area: yellow squash, zucchini, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, green beans, pole beans, October beans (also known ass cranberry beans), yellow wax beans. A lot of fruit comes from there to: Mangoes, avocados, limes, carambola (aka "Star Fruit" and grapefruit.
Beautiful country down that way, I used to love riding my mountain bike out through there because you could always enjoy the scenery, and wildlife, better. Of course, there was some excellent bass fishing in the Aerojet Canal, too. Spent many a day in a john boat on that canal. Spent some quality time out on airboats too....
I lost everything to Hurricane Andrew, and left the area soon after. I haven't been back since 1994, but still have friends and family in the area....

(9,864 posts)......i lived in the riverside apartment complex right on the turnpike at 216th. i had to move up to miramar after andrew.
where are you living now?
i'm curious about what's going on with real estate prices in the redlands. if i can find one of those 5 acre properties in the agro zone for cheap, i might like to try to buy it.

(14,912 posts)I love it here, except for some of the wingnuts I run across...
I don't know what you consider "cheap", or if you want a place with a home already on it, but I saw one of your replies about having a place to stay when you come back for business..
