Anyone here familiar with the Shaker Hymn Simple Gifts? Do you find it helpful? Relaxing?

Many videos of people singing the song on youtube. I find the simple one with church and the girls in oldtime dresses the most pleasing.

What is your experience?

He took this "simple" song and made it into a real anthem in his beautiful Appalachian Spring--

Aaron Copeland and Bernstein...beyond beautiful...

I also play a very basic version of the tune on my mountain
dulcimer and enjoy it very much.

She had expressly requested it. I was helping her in the wedding music for her outdoor wedding on Cape Cod. We hired a spring quartet. I still havea copy of her calligrophied wedding ceremony project.

I loved that wedding beyond belief. I still have the photos and a copy of her calligrophied wedding program.

We also had The Rainbow Connection, which made for an interesting set.Simple Gifts is easily one of my favorite pieces, and besides the Copland version, Yo yo ma did an absolutely heartbreaking rendition on the bass.

We had a string quartet play the music. They did a 3 preludes which included Sheep May Safely Graze by Bach and Air from the Water Music by Handel. It was lovely...

With verses I did not know

To hear the Shakers sing this, it feels as though one can touch the very hem of Heaven

I like this one, too. Yo-Yo Ma is sublime
